Earth, Mugstar soundtrack

For Summercamp FACT and Camp & Furnace have chosen two films which reflect the last ten years of the diverse cultural centre, and FACT’s commitment to experimental, immersive installations and live events, as well as local and international collaborations. These midnight film events showcase rarely seen artist film paired with exceptional, unique live soundtracks.

Ho Tzu Nyen’s Earth: a 45-minute long, slow-moving image of body-strewn apocalyptic landscapes, inspired by Neo-Classical paintings and the brutal physicality of Caravaggio. The film acts as a digital re imagining of these instantly recognizable artworks, relocating their action and savagery in a futuristic Singapore. The artist has screened this breathtaking piece around the world and always with a different one-of-a kind, specially created, live soundtrack.  For Summercamp, the formidable Mugstar will be providing the audio accompaniment to this unique piece.

Mugstar hail from Liverpool, UK and are renowned for their full-on, intense live performances of what is frequently and variously described as “Avant Space/Noise/Psych/Kraut Rock”. Difficult to define, Mugstar are always interested in experimenting and exploring territories anew working with artists and film-makers.

For their current project, we find Mugstar setting out to perform a live soundtrack in response to the film ”EARTH” by Singapore artist Ho Tzu Nyen, integrating sound with the moving image in real time. A fascinating prospect – as the camera scans its lens across an accumulated landscape of human form – a marriage of bodyscape and soundscape will emerge.
